Annalee Newitz on the power of story in disinformation

Disinformation has a long history in the United States鈥攐ften taking the form of storytelling. Best-selling author Annalee Newitz explains how stories have been weaponized鈥攈istorically and today鈥攁nd charts a path to a more peaceful future for all Americans.

Newitz writes fiction and nonfiction about the intersection of science, technology and culture. Their first novel, 鈥淎utonomous,鈥 won the Lambda Literary Award and was nominated for the Nebula and Locus Awards. Newitz鈥 book, 鈥淪catter, Adapt, and Remember鈥 was nominated for the LA Times Book Award. They are currently a contributing opinion writer at the New York Times. Previously, they were the founding editor of io9, and served as the editor-in-chief of Gizmodo and as the tech culture editor at Ars Technica. They have also written for publications including Wired, Popular Science, the New Yorker, the Atlantic, Slate, Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, and more. Newitz is the co-host of the Hugo Award-winning podcast, 鈥淥ur Opinions Are Correct.  They were the recipient of a Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT, worked as a policy analyst at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

On this episode of 鈥Story in the Public Square,鈥 Newitz dives into their book, 鈥淪tories are Weapons,鈥 a historical look at how psychological warfare evolved in the unique landscape and history of the United States.  Newitz says one of the most important discoveries they made researching psychological war in the U.S. was the spillover effect into today鈥檚 culture wars and vicious debates.  鈥淭here鈥檚 really a kind of unbroken history from military operations in the area of storytelling and psychological affect and culture war that we鈥檙e seeing online and between politicians today.鈥
