According to the CDC, more than 588,000 Americans have died from opioid overdose since 1999. Danny Strong tells the story of that epidemic in 鈥淒opesick,鈥 a new series on Hulu.
Danny Strong is one of the most prolific TV and big-screen talents today, with more than 75 acting, screenwriting, producing, directing, show running and creating credits, three directing credits, according to IMDB. For writing, directing and producing, he is best known for 鈥淩ecount,鈥 鈥淕ame Change,鈥 Lee Daniels鈥 鈥淭he Butler,鈥 and 鈥淢ockingjay,鈥 the two-part Hunger Games finale. He is also known for the 2019 TV series, 鈥淧roven Innocent鈥 and the 2017 film, 鈥淩ebel in the Rye,鈥 which he directed. Strong is co-creator of the smash hit, 鈥淓mpire.鈥 His acting career begin in 1994, when he was 20, with a role on 鈥淪aved by Bell: The New Class.鈥 His most famous roles since then have been as characters on 鈥淏uffy the Vampire Slayer,鈥 鈥淕ilmore Girls,鈥 鈥淢ad Men,鈥 鈥淛ustified and Billions.鈥 Strong鈥檚 鈥淕ame Change,鈥 the 2012 HBO production about the 2008 presidential election, won a Golden Globe, a primetime Emmy, a Writers Guild of America Award, and a Producers Guild of America Award. His 2008 HBO film 鈥淩ecount,鈥 about the 2000 presidential election, won an Emmy. He has won an NAACP Image Award for Empire and been nominated for a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe for the show. Strong was the recipient of the 2014 Pell Center Prize for Story in the Public Square. Most recently, he is the creator and an executive producer of 鈥淒opesick,鈥 the Hulu eight-part mini-series, of which he directed an episode.
On this episode of 鈥淪tory in the Public Square,鈥 Strong discusses his work on 鈥淒opesick,鈥 creating the series that follows the story of America鈥檚 opioid crisis from Purdue pharma鈥檚 deceptive marketing campaigns to a country doctor who is prescribing oxycodone to his patients in Appalachia.
鈥Story in the Public Square鈥 continues to broadcast each week on public television stations across the United States. In Rhode Island and southeastern New England, the show is broadcast on Rhode Island PBS on Sundays at 11 a.m. and is rebroadcast Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. An audio version of the program airs Saturdays at 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. ET, and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. ET on SiriusXM鈥檚 popular P.O.T.U.S. (Politics of the United States), channel 124. 鈥淪tory in the Public Square鈥 is a partnership between the Pell Center and The Providence Journal.
